Another good site for nicely-formatted, free classics is https://standardebooks.org. They're up to 155 titles now, and usually add two or three new books each month.
FWIW, direct downloads from some sites other than Amazon are available by using the Kindle's own web browser. Project Gutenberg's site, for example, is Kindle-browser friendly.
PG, however, does not have consistently good formatting. Some editions there are great, others not so much.
Tip: Be sure to turn your Kindle's wireless access off after finishing or your battery will drain quickly.
I've secretly had a Kindle for about two years now. I used to be staunchly against them. I was wrong. I was a twat. They are awesome. Mine was about 40 quid. Which is about 1,600 of your dollars. And it's amazing. But you really need to download content onto it at home before you take it out. Unless wifi is brilliant and plentiful in Taiwan.
