Politics in Taiwan is lively and often a good spectator sport. Please make sure that the schoolboy shenanigans stay in the Legislative Assembly and not in the forums here at Taiwaneasia, ok? The moderators thank you in advance for your cooperation!

The Council of Grand Justices ruled that it's unconstitutional to ban same-sex marriage. I could have sworn I saw this on Taiwanease last night, but I can't find it now. In any case, good news. Makes me proud to be Taiwanese.

It's a good step in the right direction.
Don't talk to me about naval tradition. It's nothing but rum, sodomy and the lash.

oooh, kinky. Last year we tried it on my birthday instead of at Christmas.
I didn't realise this, but the Constitution is actually available in English. It's quite interesting, if you like that sort of thing. There's a lot of stuff in there that (IMO) properly belongs in the civil code rather than the Constitution. http://english.president.gov.tw/Default.aspx?tabid=1107
I have a dog, a cat, a rabbit and a pygmy hedgehog. It is NOT all same-sex.
The Grand Justices' deadline for enacting legalization is coming up in a month, but has anyone figured out yet just what is going to happen? Word is the KMT and DPP will try to "compromise" with each other on this. That sounds even more confusing.
Is anyone here going to try to get hitched soon? Know someone else who will?
Dunno but can recommend a great baker for the rainbow cakes.

None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Eat the delicious food. Walk in the sunshine. Jump in the ocean. Say the truth that you’re carrying in your heart like hidden treasure. Be silly. Be kind. Be weird. There’s no time for anything else
Good news today! https://edition.cnn.com/2019/05/17/asia ... index.html
"Lawmakers in Taiwan have approved a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, a landmark decision that makes the self-ruled island the first place in Asia to pass gay marriage legislation. "
“To cook for the pleasure of it, to devote a portion of our leisure to it, is to declare our independence from the corporations seeking to organize our every waking moment into yet another occasion for consumption." --Michael Pollan
That's good to see.
But I'm puzzled that, according to a different article, "lawmakers voted 84-6 against an NPP motion to amend the Cabinet's bill to allow transnational same-sex couples from any country to get married in Taiwan." Taiwan could get many, many tourists coming here for marriages (their own and those of friends). Taiwan would have no competition for this in all of Asia! Why shoot itself in the foot this way?
And foreigners wanting to marry their Taiwanese spouses are still out of luck if their home countries don't have similar legalization. (So now they care about reciprocity?)
But, still, a historic first.
Might they be worried about pissing off other countries?
Though not perfect, it's a major victory for freedom and equality in Asia. Hopefully other Asian countries will follow suit once they see that homophobia is not an "Asian value".
