Grammar Nazis are, apparently, really Nazis, i.e. racist.

NOT to be confused with http://www.americanenglish.com/ which has nothing to do with language.

And to those who have asked about my exercise routine:

I feel a rant coming on, and this is the obvious place to do it.

What's up with the increasing usage of "go ahead and ..."? I'm looking at some instructions at the moment that has this phrase:

"When you have your document open, go ahead and select all the text elements on the artboard."

Where am I going? Where, exactly, is 'ahead' in this context? Why are those words even in that sentence?

Just lately, this seems to crop up on every third tutorial I look at. Tends to be more common in spoken (YouTube) variants.

OK, it's style or diction, not grammar, but it winds me up no end.

"go ahead" is informal speech for "proceed"; "go ahead and" is equivalent to "proceed to". It's not exactly new; I've heard it all my life. And in New York City they say "g'head". "ahead" is the metaphorical direction of the intended goal.

It shouldn't be used in formal writing. Perhaps the tutorials you are looking at are all written by the same person, and that person tends to overuse the phrase.

Yeah, I get that, but it's normally used in the sense of giving permission. And even if it does mean 'proceed', it's completely superfluous in that sentence, and in 90% of similar sentences I see lately. It could be deleted without any change in the meaning.

Don't mind me. I probably should have been a newspaper editor, obsessively bluelining everything that isn't 100% critical.
