WHAT IF ... the KMT had never controlled Taiwan?

Postby cranky laowai » Mon Feb 12, 2018 12:27

Someone I know recently posed this question: If Taiwan had become independent just after the Second World War and thus never had been under KMT rule, what would the country be like now? Would it look more like Japan or the Philippines?

What do you think?

I suppose the pertinent question then would be: who would have been in charge instead? Even if Taiwan had been de jure independent, surely it still would have been the KMT?

Although the KMT were are bunch of corrupt, incompetent scumbags, it's funny how history pans out. A sequence of serendipitous events brought Taiwan to its present state (well, that and a shitload of American cash). It's possible that those events would have never occurred if the KMT and General Failure had not been running the show.

It would have been taken over by the Communists. Without US support it would have been helpless.
