Where to go around Banff, Canada?

Where to go around Banff, Canada?

Postby cranky laowai » Fri Apr 12, 2019 22:15

I'm flying into and out of Calgary this summer. What are good places to see, given two weeks and a car?

Probably no camping, but otherwise prefer mountains, etc., to cities.

Vancouver is as close to there as I've ever been, so everything around there will be new to me.

Columbia Ice Fields is fun. I also remember a day long horseback ride that was amazing - try and do one if you can. Hot springs are good, especially when it's snowing. The Banff gondola is ok, canoeing on Lake Louise is wonderful because the water is so clear, you can see for meters and meters down. I think you'd get the most bang for your memory buck with horseback riding, icefields, and canoeing, tbh.

Drumheller is 90 minutes east of Calgary. The Prairie flattens out a lot that way and turns into the Badlands. Drumheller itself is, for real, in a hole in the ground. Big draw there is a world-class dinosaur museum.

If you're enjoying the scenery around Banff (hard not to), a few hours driving up the 93 to Jasper will be worth your while.
